Within this blog post, you will be able to find the gender of your guinea pig. As a rule of thumb, if a guinea pig stick suckling on their mother or is below 3 weeks of age do not handle them. This can cause a abandonment from their mother and they can get cold.

Buying guinea pigs- It is most common to get male guinea pigs if you are buying them from a pet store. From personal experience, sometimes the pet store accidentally gets females and will sell them not knowing the guinea pig is labeled incorrectly. Checking the gender of the guinea pig(s) before purchasing or receiving is important, especially if you are buying more than one at once. Guinea pigs are social animals and a lot of people recommend getting more than one guinea pig.

Handling- There are multiple ways to handle a guinea pig while gendering them but I am going to talk about the main two that I would recommend. I always recommend checking the sex of the guinea pig sitting on the ground or over something that is close to the guinea pig like a table or bed. This is in case the guinea pig gets uncomfortable or bites you and falls out of your hands.

How to gender- The best way for new guinea pig owners to check the sex is with two people. Have one person hold the guinea pig with one hand on the bum of the guinea pig but not covering the area of the genitals. Have the other hand under the belly of the guinea pig holding firmly but not too tight to hurt them. The send person will be the one to push slightly up on their private area. You might have to use your other hand to stretch the skin around the area more depending on the age and size of your guinea pig.

Males- Male guinea pigs tend to have a space between their penis and anus. The penis is a circular shape  with an opening in the middle. If you feel around the area of the penis you should find the testicles. Warning! If you can not find the testicles, it does not rule out that it is a male. Sometimes they are just not able to be palpated.

Females- Female guinea pigs do not have a lot of space between their vulva and anus. The vulva is as obvious and is in a Y shape. Female guinea pig’s private area are generally flat and has an outline of the y around the vulva
